Information?

Tooth loss can detract from your daily quality of life in several ways. For example, you might worry about being judged for the changes to your appearance and avoid spending time with others. You might also develop dietary changes and altered speech patterns.
Your dentist can restore some or all of your missing teeth with lifelike dentures, but you might need to use adhesives if they’re destabilized or don’t fit well. Continue reading to learn more about the types of glues available and how to use them!
Who Needs Denture Adhesives?
Essentially, anyone whose restoration feels wobbly or is struggling to complete basic tasks, like eating or speaking, can benefit from using adhesives to help anchor their teeth. Some common occasions when it can be particularly beneficial might include:
- When taking certain medications. Cold meds and some prescriptions can cause dry mouth, which makes it harder for your dentures to suction to your connective tissues.
- When speaking or performing. Singers, musicians, teachers, and other professionals who are frequently on stage or presenting to others can benefit from an extra-strong hold.
- If you’re worried about embarrassment. If you’re afraid your new teeth might slip out at an inopportune time, like during meals or conversations with loved ones or at work, using glues can boost your confidence that they’ll remain in place.
How Should I Apply Denture Adhesive?
There are several types of denture glues, and they usually come with printed directions, so you know exactly how much product to use and the best way to apply it. It might vary slightly based on the brand, but typically you can expect the following:
Creams
These options usually come in a squeezable tube and have a paste-like consistency when applied. First, wash and dry your dentures so you’re working with a clean surface. Then, apply short strips of cream to the underside of the base, taking care not to place any too close to the edges to avoid oozing. Then, press your teeth gently into place and bite down firmly for a few seconds to allow the bond to fully form.
Powders
Powder glues are easier to use than creams and are often popular for those with mobility concerns. You’ll want to begin with a clean surface, so be sure to wash them off. Then, leave them wet so the powder clings to the surface when sprinkled. Be sure to cover the entire underside that touches your connective tissues, then gently shake off the excess before inserting them. Press and hold for a few seconds to stabilize them in your mouth.
Strips
These pre-administered strips can be easily peeled and placed as-is on the underside of your teeth after you’ve rinsed and dried them. Try to keep them away from the edges, and don’t overlap the strips. You might need to tear or trim them before placing them on the acrylic foundation.
If adhesives aren’t keeping your dentures in your mouth, it’s time to contact your dentist to ensure they’re fitting as intended!
