Dentures have become the standard to replace missing teeth because they benefit your well-being and also improve your appearance. Who doesn’t feel more confident about themselves when they have a full smile of teeth, after all? Plus, they help you eat and speak more normally which is essential for your daily life.

It’s important to care for your dentures properly if you plan to continue to enjoy the many advantages. Keep reading to learn 4 tips to keep your dentures in prime condition so they’ll last for years to come!

Tip #1: Rinse Dentures After Meals

Food particles from foods you consume can stick to, or get caught between, your dentures during meals. Unhealthy bacteria thrive on this, so it’s important to clean them off. You should remove them and rinse with warm water after eating or drinking to prevent a buildup of plaque, that can cause bad breath or even gum disease.

Tip #2: Clean Dentures Daily

It’s important that you brush and floss your dentures twice daily, just like you would your natural pearly whites. However, some commercial products may be abrasive so be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush, or one specifically designed for brushing dentures. Use a non-abrasive toothpaste and gently cleanse all surfaces but be careful not to bend any of the parts. You can also soak them in specialized denture solutions, but this does not replace brushing.

Tip #3: Handle Dentures With Care

Dentures are somewhat fragile in that they can bend or break if dropped or handled too roughly. Make a conscious effort not to bend the plastic or clasps when you remove them for cleaning. Also, always try to remove them over a sink of water or a folded towel so they won’t get hurt if they slip and fall.

Tip #4: Soak Dentures At Night

If your dentures dry out, they become brittle and can fracture or become misshapen. To keep them in good health, they need to stay moist. That means wearing them most of the day and placing them in a glass of water or denture-soaking solution at night. Remember, do not use hot water! Use cool or room-temperature water to avoid warping the plastic.

If you notice that your dentures have cracks or aren’t fitting well anymore, contact your dentist! They will need to see you to assess what is happening and why. Then they’ll be able to repair or replace your dentures so you can keep making the most of them for years to come!
