Your child's smile is always growing and changing, and children’s dentistry makes keeping up with their care simple. At Sunny Dental, our team is all about comfort and creating positive experiences that your child will carry with them as they grow. Dental checkups and cleanings are the foundation of that experience, offering time to refresh, examine, and learn.

Children's teeth are more vulnerable to decay because they’re smaller, and children don’t often have the skills to clean their smiles as they should. Over time, built-up plaque and tartar can cause issues like cavities and gum disease.
Left untreated, these problems can cause baby teeth to fall out prematurely, making it more difficult for the developing adult tooth underneath to erupt properly. A visit to our Lancaster dental office every six months gives our pediatric dentist a chance to catch small problems before they worsen.
We also use this time to check that your child's bite and jaw development are on track and apply protective treatments like fluoride and dental sealants to give their enamel a little boost. Most importantly, these visits build the kind of positive dental habits that last a lifetime.

A dental checkup at Sunny Dental is robust but never rushed. Our pediatric dentist will examine your child's teeth, gums, and jaw to make sure everything looks healthy and is developing properly. We'll check for signs of tooth decay, gum irritation, bite issues, and any problems with emerging teeth.
We also take digital X-rays when needed to spot concerns that we can’t see, like decay forming between teeth or problematic permanent teeth. Because we use all-digital X-rays, radiation exposure is minimal. In fact, it’s about the same amount you’d get just walking through the produce section at the grocery store!
After the exam, we'll walk you through our findings, answer any questions you or your child has, and discuss next steps—whether that’s treatment or adjustments to their home routine.

A dental cleaning is where much of the hands-on care happens. One of our gentle dental hygienists will carefully remove any plaque and tartar that has built up since your child's last visit, especially in the spots their toothbrush tends to miss. We'll then polish their teeth to a smooth, clean finish.
After cleaning, we'll typically apply a fluoride treatment to strengthen their enamel and help protect against cavities until their next visit. If your child is old enough and their teeth have deep grooves, we may also recommend dental sealants as an extra line of defense.
